Since 2000 the A131 has seen 1,059 collisions, 26 of them fatal and 236 serious. That ranks it 473rd of 6,754 numbered A, B and M roads by total recorded collisions. Its fatal rate is 24.6 per 1,000 collisions, and 25% caused death or serious injury. Collisions have fallen by about 46% since 2000, from 65 to 35 in 2024. The heaviest local concentrations are in Braintree, Babergh and Chelmsford.
