Since 2000 the A174 has seen 1,141 collisions, 28 of them fatal and 204 serious. That ranks it 423rd of 6,754 numbered A, B and M roads by total recorded collisions. Its fatal rate is 24.5 per 1,000 collisions, and 20% caused death or serious injury. Collisions have fallen by about 37% since 2000, from 62 to 39 in 2024. The heaviest local concentrations are in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire and Middlesbrough.
