Since 2000 the A556 has seen 1,057 collisions, 31 of them fatal and 156 serious. That ranks it 474th of 6,754 numbered A, B and M roads by total recorded collisions. Its fatal rate is 29.3 per 1,000 collisions, and 18% caused death or serious injury. Collisions have fallen by about 13% since 2000, from 46 to 40 in 2024. The heaviest local concentrations are in Cheshire, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester.
