Since 2000 the A701 has seen 1,167 collisions, 41 of them fatal and 230 serious. That ranks it 416th of 6,754 numbered A, B and M roads by total recorded collisions. Its fatal rate is 35.1 per 1,000 collisions, and 23% caused death or serious injury. Collisions have fallen by about 47% since 2000, from 55 to 29 in 2024. The heaviest local concentrations are in Dumfries and Galloway, Midlothian and City of Edinburgh.
