Crashes on the M40

Since 2000 the M40 has seen 5,295 collisions, 157 of them fatal and 808 serious. That ranks it 57th of 6,754 numbered A, B and M roads by total recorded collisions. Its fatal rate is 29.7 per 1,000 collisions, and 18% caused death or serious injury. Collisions have fallen by about 73% since 2000, from 333 to 90 in 2024. The heaviest local concentrations are in Buckinghamshire, Cherwell and South Oxfordshire.
